Author Guidelines

Excursions publishes content with citations and bibliography in Harvard format, in addition to having some of its own particular style guidelines. Please ensure that you check your document against Harvard guidelines first and this supplementary checklist second before submitting. Papers which do not adhere to these guidelines will be rejected. We do realize that many of the items on this list are exceedingly basic and that most of you will have done these things automatically; your efforts, for which we are grateful, do not go unnoticed. Experience has taught us nonetheless that it helps to have a gentle reminder.

Document Format Please ensure that your document: has been spell-checked and grammar-checked; follows the conventions of British spelling (i.e. colour vs. color, capitalise vs capitalize etc); has 1-inch margins on all sides; is in Times New Roman 12 pt font with the exception of the title, which should be in 14 pt font; is double-spaced; includes page numbers on the top right of each page (with the exception of page 1); includes a header on the top right of each page (with the exception of page 1) which lists the author’s full name & title of the document (a partial title is acceptable in cases where the title especially long); and is left-justified.

Titles Please ensure that: the document title in 14 pt Times New Roman font and is centered; neither the document title nor subtitles are underlined (make them bold only); there two lines only between the title and the opening quote, and between the opening quote and the beginning of the article; if there is no epigraph, there two lines only between the title and the first line of the article; if the title is longer than one line only, the title is single-spaced and the line break is at an appropriate place, so that there is not a hanging conjunction or preposition at the end of the top line.

Paragraphs Please ensure that: all paragraphs are indented; there are no extra spaces between paragraphs, unless before a subheading paragraphs; and are of a reasonable length

Citations Please ensure that: all citations are consistently and correctly formatted according to Harvard standards block quotes; are double-indented on both sides any opening quotes (if there are any); and are single-spaced.

Endnotes Please ensure that: endnotes are single-spaced endnotes have full stops, and are in Times New Roman 10 pt font (*this is equivalent to Times New Roman 12 pt font in “Endnote Reference” style); the beginnings of sentences in the endnotes are consistently spaced (i.e. with one space between the numeral); the beginning of the endnotes are not indented; and please ensure there are only two spaces between numeral and the beginning of endnote.

Bibliography
Please ensure that: every reference that’s cited in the document is actually listed in the bibliography; the bibliography is in alphabetical order; all words in all titles and bibliographies are appropriately capitalized; the entries in the bibliography are double-spaced; there is a page break between the end of the text and the beginning of the bibliography; the title of the bibliography is centered; and the bibliographic entries do not have full stops.

Copyright Notice Please ensure that there is a copyright notice inserted five hard returns after the last bibliographic entry. Copyright notice should be centred, Times New Roman 10 pt font (e.g. Copyright © Author First Name Last Name Year). If the five hard returns will put the copyright notice on a page by itself, then please include the copyright notice on the bottom line of the bibliography page rather than putting it on a page by itself.
